Daily Trihune Tuesday, May 8, 1956 HAIL CHICAGO'S REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC TOLL Citizens' Group Marks Fifth Birthday BY HAL FOUST Chicago's progress in accident prevention and its aims for further reduction were told by its top officials yesterday at a luncheon marking the fifth birthday of the Citizens' Traffic Safety board. Howard Willett, board el chairman, noted that Chicago has risen in five years from the worst to the best city 1 million population in the statistics of traffic deaths per registered vehicle. He credited public officials for this saving of lives. The officials, headed by Mayor Daley and by Dan Ryan, president of, the Cook county board, credited citizen cooperation. Ryan Calls Meeting Ryan said that future traffic improvements in Chicago can be expected from the completion of an expressway system radiating from the Loop.

He said he was calling a meeting of mayors and police officers in Cook county outside of Chicago to try to curb a rising toll in country towns. Police Commissioner O'Connor said statistics tell part of the story of Chicago's safety campaign. In 1951, there were 418 deaths and 28,856 tickets issued for moving violations. Ir. 1955, there were 385 deaths and 126,455 tickets for moving violations.

Ald. Thomas Keane chairman of the council committee on traffic, told of the expansion of one-way streets and of development of offstreet parking facilities. Plan Traffic School Chief Justice Raymond P. Drymalski, of the municipal courts, said the centralization of traffic courts was a step toward better law enforcement. He told of plans for the court to operate a traffic school for offenders.

Virgil Gunlock, chairman of the Chicago transit authority, said the community had an ob-1 ligation to provide more efficient as well as safer transportation. Franklin Kreml of Northwestern university's transportation school said that Chicago cannot rest upon the laurels it has accumulated in the last five years. He said the outlook is for an increase in metropolitan traffic congestion. ARTHUR DANIELS DIES; EXECUTIVE OF 3 COMPANIES Arthur W. Daniels, 68, of 1010 Lake Wilmette, died yesterday in New York.

He was vice president of the American Magnesium Steel company of Chicago Heights, president of the Universal Engineering corporation of Cedar Rapids, and vice president and board chairman of the Durham Aircraft service. Luth. church, Chicago Heights, building fund. Frank Bernasek, 26, of 109 N. Roy Northlake, was killed and another worker was injured last night in a flash fire in the Scholle Chemical corporation plant, 200 W. North Northlake.

Injured was James Westerdorf, 27, of 3d and Westwood Lombard. He was taken to Elmhurst hospital with burns on the face, neck, and back. Police said Bernasek and Westerdorf were in a chemical mixing room on the second floor section at the rear of the building where the fire started. A foreman and two other workers escaped without injury. Firemen were unable to determine how the fire started.

They placed the damage at $5,000. The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes. The company makes paint thinner, battery acids, and mixes paints. 19 MONTHS OLD BOY KILLED IN 3D FLOOR FALL Roger Lee Wydner, 19 months, of 4866 Winthrop was killed last night when he fell from a third floor window of his home. His father, Ira, 26, a spray painter, was asleep at the time.

His mother, Thelma, was visiting Roger Wydner in a second 'floor apartment. The boy was pronounced dead on arrival at Weiss Memorial hospital. The child was found in an areaway by a passerby, Summerdale police said. They added that he apparently had climbed on a couch and slipped or fell from the window. Louise Zekman, 38, of 1627 Hyde Park was fatally injured yesterday when she fell down a flight of stairs in the hallway of the apartment building in which she lived.
