The Skull Valley Band of Goshute is one of the two bands of the Goshute Nation, the other being the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute. The band has a reservation of 17,920 acres in Tooele County, at Skull Valley, Utah, and their membership is 127.

The Mormons herded livestock in Tooele Valley before permanent settlement began in 1849. The early settlers farmed, built gristmills and sawmills, and manufactured salt, charcoal, lime, adobe bricks, and woolen products.

The name possibly originates from Indians known to early pioneers as "Tooelians," who lived in the area, although others claim it comes from the Spanish word for a bulrush plant found in the area. As early as 1847, Tooele Valley, known for its waist-high grass, was used for grazing by herders from other valleys.

Wide-open desert made Tooele a perfect test site for the United State's growing arsenal of chemical and biological weapons in the 1940s. The Dugway Proving Ground was the epicenter for the development and testing of new missiles and is still operated by the U.S. Army today.

The largest group is the Ute people, with ancestral lands east of the Great Salt Lake and into Colorado. The Uintah and Ouray Reservation, about 150 miles east of Salt Lake City, is the second-largest reservation in the country, at 4.5 million acres.
